Madeline Island – Northern Wisconsin

Madeline Island is the largest of the 22 Apostle Islands off northern Wisconsin in Lake Superior. To reach the island we took a 20 minute ferry ride as pedestrian passengers and left the RV in Bayfield, WI.

The island is 14 miles long and 3 miles wide which is extremely similar in size and shape to Manhattan. This would have to be the alternate reality version of the city — peaceful, uncrowded, rustic and primarily a wildlife refuge.

Back in Schroeder Minnesota, Lake Superior was so cold we didn’t even think of going swimming. Here, the lake’s temperature seemed much warmer and we regretted we couldn’t get back to the RV to change into our swimsuits and take a dip.

We were there the day after Labor Day and the island felt deserted. Many businesses were closed or closing, the beach was empty and the streets were quiet. The island’s industry is summertime tourism and we can see why it’s such an attraction. We’d like to come back and spend a lot more time exploring the island. I’ll have to add it to the ever-growing “would like to see more of” destination list.
